Overtone flutes are the ancestors of all flutes. They have no finger holes or keys. The different notes are produced solely by how strongly or weakly one blows into the flute. By opening and closing the lower end with a finger, varied melodies can be played. This is child's play and creates a very beautiful, archaic sound, e.g., for music around a campfire.
Our overtone flutes are made of bamboo and have a warm, smoky sound. They are tuned to a fundamental note of C#3 and are 61 cm long. By closing the bottom end of the flute, the tonal range is extended by a second overtone scale. Most overtone flutes can be overblown about 5 to 7 times, which, together with the second scale, makes for 10 to 14 possible notes.
