The Ouroboros bites its own tail, creating a self-contained circle, without beginning or end. Therefore, it is also known as the snake of eternity. It is considered a symbol of cosmic unity: All is One, One is All. Everything is in eternal change, and at the center is the circling infinity.
The first images of the Ouroboros are found in ancient (Egyptian and Greek) mythology, which is why its name ("tail-eater") probably also comes from Old Greek. But the Midgard Serpent from Norse mythology and the Kundalini serpent from Indian yoga philosophy also form this image and thus a world circle. The alchemists see in the Ouroboros the eternal process of transformation of matter towards the ever finer, in a self-sufficient system.
