In Hinduism and Buddhism, the syllable OM (transliterated from Sanskrit as AUM) is one of the most important spiritual symbols. Om is the primordial sound, the first vibration of creation, a mystical sound. Whoever grasps it attains all wishes - so it is written in the Upanishads, the sacred texts of Indian (Vedic) mythology. A symbol of spiritual power, self-discovery and the primal sound of all being.
During the Aum sound in meditation, the breath flows very slowly out of the mouth and the entire body is set into vibration. OM is the shortest, but is considered the most comprehensive and strongest mantra. In Buddhism, this syllable is often preceded by mantras of several words to help one find inner concentration more easily.
