Herbal bundles made from the leaves and stems of White Sage (Smudge Sticks) are an important incense of the indigenous peoples of North America. The smoke is a prayer; it connects Mother Earth with the Great Spirit. The plant predominantly grows in the southwestern USA and parts of Mexico, where it is harvested and hand-tied.
White sage is a powerful atmospheric purifier and is used in healing ceremonies, rituals, and for spiritual cleansing – it is one of the strongest energetic cleansing "brooms" among herbs. The smoke is even said to effectively rid the air of bacteria, thus ensuring a healthy indoor climate. This also aids concentration and promotes a clear mind.
Incidentally, our native garden sage serves very similar purposes :) The two plants belong to the same family.
How to use: Directly ignite the tip of the sage stick (with a lighter, candle flame, ...) & wave out the flames. The sage will now glow at the tip. You can now walk through the room with this smudge stick – perhaps hold a small plate or abalone shell underneath to catch any glowing herbal remnants. Now you can smudge the room – walk in circles from one corner to another; feel free to speak a few words – and then ventilate thoroughly. What needs to leave requires open doors! You can also wonderfully cleanse yourself and other people with sage. To extinguish it, stick the glowing tip into a bowl of sand, for example. Store dry, then you can continue smudging next time. This could be the very next day, or many times later – follow your intuition. If you can "smell it," it's not too much.
