Herbal bundles made from the leaves & stems of White Sage (Smudge Sticks) are an important incense of the indigenous peoples of North America. The smoke is a prayer; it connects Mother Earth with the Great Spirit. The plant grows predominantly in the southwestern USA and parts of Mexico, where it is collected and hand-tied.
White sage is atmospherically strongly cleansing and is used in healing ceremonies, rituals, and for spiritual purification - it is one of the strongest energetic cleansing brooms among herbs. The smoke is even said to effectively clear the air of bacteria, thus ensuring a healthy indoor climate. This also helps with concentration and promotes a clear mind.
Incidentally, our native garden sage serves very similar purposes :) The two plants belong to the same family.
How to use: Light the tip of the sage stick directly (with a lighter, candle flame, ...) & blow out the flames. Now the sage will glow at the tip. With this smudge bundle, you can now walk through the room - perhaps holding a small plate or abalone shell underneath to catch glowing herbal residues. Now you can smudge the room - walk in circles from one corner to the other, feel free to speak a few words, and then ventilate well. What needs to go out needs open doors! You can also wonderfully smudge yourself and other people with sage. To extinguish, stick the glowing tip into a bowl of sand, for example. Store dry, then you can continue smudging next time. This can be the next day, or many times later - follow your intuition. If you can "smell it," it's not too much.
