Frankincense
Weihrauch – Olibanum – Frankincense
Frankincense is one of the most well-known and important incense resins worldwide. The term "Weihrauch" (German for frankincense) was formerly often used as a collective term for various incense resins – a legacy from ancient times, when precious resins found their way to us via the legendary Incense Road.
The name comes from the Old High German Wihrou(c)h – "holy smoke". For millennia, frankincense has been valued as an incense in spiritual traditions, rituals, and in medicine and healing.
Botanically, two main species are distinguished: Boswellia sacra, which primarily comes from the Arabian region, and Boswellia serrata from the Indian subcontinent. The scent, consistency, and effect vary depending on the origin. The harvest time also influences the quality of the frankincense – later harvests are considered particularly high quality.
Frankincense was once so precious that it was considered the "gold of antiquity" and was traded over long distances. Today, it no longer travels by camel along the 3400 km long Incense Road. The conditions in some countries of origin have also changed. In parts of Arabia, political conflicts make it difficult to care for the mostly wild frankincense trees and affect the availability of this special resin. This makes careful and respectful handling of this gift of nature all the more valuable.
We offer you a fine selection of pure frankincense (Olibanum / Frankincense) from various regions – ideal for incense rituals, meditation, and energetic cleansing.
